Learn how to wear a sweater dress confidently whatever your shape or size, with these 7 magical tips and tricks:

1. Wear it with tights

You can keep your legs bare if you wish, but I think if it’s cold enough for a sweater dress, it’s better to wear tights. There’s no point freezing in the cold or getting sick in the name of fashion, is there now? If black is too basic for you, choose coloured, textured or even patterned tights. But nothing gives that slimming effect better than plain black tights.

2. Wear it with a belt

Got a chunky knit sweater dress? Want to add definition to your look? Then, belt it up! A belt really helps to separate the top half from your bottom half, helping you resemble that gorgeous hour glass shape – adding a belt accentuates your curves dramatically. Note: Try to colour coordinate your belt to your sweater dress and your shoes.

3. The inner details

If you’ve got the flabs, there’s no need to worry- you can wear the sweater dress with a spanx or a slip underneath! No one will even notice it! Now for women who aren’t heavy but who get that occasional lunch tummy bulge, some good form fitting inner wears will also do the trick.

4. Shoes

Heels are great for sex appeal, as they add height and make you look slender. But that doesn’t mean you can’t wear flats- anything goes with sweater dresses really- as long as you don’t wear sneakers or thongs! My favourite style is wearing a sweater dress with boots- the look is always polished and cool.

5. Accessories

Statement pieces such as a pearl or a diamond earring and necklace suit best with sweater dresses. If your sweater dress is made of chunky knits, keep your accessories subtle. Long, beaded chain necklaces are always a good option.

6. Bag

Choose slouchy, shoulder bags for that casual, relaxed look. If you’re wearing a sweater dress to work, a satchel will add sophistication and style. As for parties after dark, choose a clutch or an envelope purse in striking colours and patterns.

7. Layer up

If it’s too cold to go solo with a sweater dress, layer up in a trench coat, or a peacoat. Avoid bulky knits and go for soft textures and fine knits. It’s easier to colour coordinate if you go with neutrals like grey, light brown, crème, or even black. Don’t be afraid to experiment with other colours though. Violet, for example, is also a good choice.  A sweater dress is ultra-versatile, so in the end, how you choose to wear it, comes down to how you choose to express yourself. However you wear it, make sure you own it!
